UNT Dallas Faculty and Students to Provide Counseling to Oklahoma Tornado Survivors

UNT Dallas Foundation Creates Survivors Wellness Fund for Supplies and Toys for Children’s Play Therapy

DALLAS (June 12, 2013) – The University of North Texas at Dallas (UNT Dallas) announced today that Dr. Jennifer Baggerly, chair and professor of counseling, will lead a disaster mental health team, including Dr. Eric Green, associate professor, and three students to Moore, Oklahoma this month to provide counseling to child tornado survivors.  To support their volunteer efforts, the UNT Dallas Foundation has created the Survivors Wellness Fund to raise money for therapeutic supplies and toys.

“Our service to provide healing to Oklahoma’s children fulfills the UNT Dallas mission of community engagement,” said Baggerly.  “I am proud that our students and graduates exhibit the competencies to fulfill this mission.”

The UNT Dallas team will provide their time and talents through World Vision, a faith-based humanitarian organization.  Their onsite work will include various therapy interventions with the children and their families through art, books, culturally appropriate puppets, dolls and games.  The therapeutic supplies and toys will be given to the children to continue their journey of emotional healing.

“Just as homes, schools and businesses have to be rebuilt, so does emotional wellness,” said Green.
“These children and their families have experienced an unfathomable calamity and we are committed to helping them.”

Doug Smith, president & CEO for the UNT Dallas Foundation, Inc., called the volunteer effort an example of UNT Dallas’ commitment to civic engagement.

“We commend Drs. Baggerly and Green and the UNT Dallas students for their efforts,” said Smith.  “Community service and engagement is a core value at UNT Dallas and their work is a testament to that commitment.  We ask that the community help support their work and those devastated by this tragedy through the Survivors Wellness Fund.”
