His Excellency Ambassador Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa, visited the University of North Texas at Dallas on June 22, 2016 to learn about the university and its mission to empower, transform and strengthen. The Ambassador said he was glad to be on campus as "education is something dear to me personally. In the words of Nelson Mandela, education is the most powerful tool to change the world.”
President Bob Mong received the guests with Dr. Daniel Edelman, CFO and Executive Vice President of Administration and other members of his Cabinet.
H.E. Ambassador Mahlangu was invited visit the University of North Texas at Dallas by State Representative, the Honorable Helen Giddings.
The Honorable Helen Giddings is not only a Texas State Representative, but also serves as the Honorary Consul from Dallas to South Africa, and has the distinction of being the first Honorary Consul named by the new South African democratic government. As an Honorary Consul, Rep. Giddings has many memories working with Mr. Mandela. Reflecting on her first meeting with Mr. Mandela, Giddings said, "I will forever treasure the privilege of spending time with him. My first meeting with Mr. Mandela in 1995 was a unique experience that was an absolute realization that I was standing in the presence of greatness. Later meetings were just as inspirational and I continued to be in awe of both his charisma and his humility."
The Ambassador was inspired by the work of the University and proposed partnerships between UNT Dallas and like-minded universities in South Africa.
