Core Leadership Classes

At CPI, we believe that opportunities for leadership training should be available at every juncture of your public safety career. That’s why we start with an intensive program for future leaders—and continue to offer cutting-edge, holistic training for sergeants, lieutenants, and beyond.

Advanced Leadership Series: This 17-day program is specifically geared toward lieutenants or equivalent ranks, and seeks to emphasize the importance of leadership in an individual and organizational context. Course content will include material in the core content areas of decision-making, communication, management, and leadership, with emphasis on personal and career development. Programs can be tailored to fit your agency’s scheduling needs. Our Advanced Leadership Series graduates learn to think differently about organizational challenges, incorporate evidence-based practices into their problem-solving, discuss the effects of socioeconomic and political issues on police administration, employ principles of emotional intelligence and conflict resolution, and map out their career goals with concrete objectives.

Sergeant Supervisory Series: Our 15-day program is specifically geared toward newly promoted first-line supervisors/sergeants, and is designed to assist new sergeants in navigating the critical shift between officer and sergeant. The program can also be adapted to include experienced sergeants looking to strengthen their leadership skills. Course content includes interactive discussions on decision-making, communication, management, and leadership, with emphasis on personal and career development.  Programs can be hosted in a 3 week (15 consecutive days), 5 week (three days/week), 6 week (one week on/one week off), or 15-week (one day/week) sessions. At the end of our program, participants will have had in-depth training and discussion in areas such as communication, conflict resolution, socioeconomic and political factors affecting police leaders, procedural justice, mentoring and coaching, and much more. 

Leadership Development Series: This rigorous 15-day program is specifically geared toward police officers, senior corporals, detectives, and equivalent ranks with between two and five years experience in policing. This program seeks to emphasize the importance of personal and career development and takes a high-level, seminar-style and holistic approach to examining principles of informal leadership, procedural justice, evidence-based practice, conflict resolution, leadership legacies, and policing in complex socioeconomic/political atmospheres.  This program meets daily for a week at a time, with a week's gap in between the three sessions. Graduates will receive a well-rounded leadership experience that emphasizes personal development and networking as a part of organizational success, and includes a group project with practical applications for public safety agencies.

Civilian Supervisory Series:  This 10-day program is specifically geared toward non-sworn or civilian supervisors who work in a law enforcement or criminal justice environment. Course content will include material in the areas of decision-making, communication, management, and leadership. Issues relevant to civilians working with law enforcement/criminal justice personnel as well as management and leadership will be discussed. Programs can be hosted in a 2 week (10 consecutive days), 4 week (one week on, one week off), or 5 week (two days/week) session. Graduates receive instruction that focuses on personal and career development, as well as principles and implementation of effective communication; management versus leadership principles; and considerations for decision-making.
