Online Teaching Certification
This certification needs to be completed prior to teaching an online or hybrid course. In 2021-2022, there are two options leading to online teaching certification:
Choice 1
Complete the two face-to-face workshops titled "Building Courses in Canvas" and "Managing Courses in Canvas". These workshops are offered periodically in fall and spring, in DAL 170 and/or virtually. In summer, these two workshops are available on demand.
Choice 2
Complete the online, ten-week, "Canvas Online Instructor Training" course.
Updated Certification
From 2022-2023, an updated (likely self-paced) version of this certification will be replace the two current options. In collaboration with the Distance Learning Advisory Committee, DLIT will redesign this certification to reflect a mix of instructional technology, pedagogical/andragogical approaches, and best practices in teaching online.
Course Quality Certification
In 2021-2022, there is an expectation that online/hybrid courses meet at least 75% of the OLC OSCQR scorecard before they can be offered to students. There is a process with specific timelines and deadlines which must be met to ensure the course(s) meet quality standards and are ready well before semester start.
Updated Certification
From 2022-2023, faculty creating online/hybrid courses will collaborate closely with an instructional designer for a sustained period of time to systematically build to meet at least 85% of the Quality Matters standards and federal RSI requirements.
(New) Online Course Design Certification
From 2022-2023, before designing an online course, faculty will need to complete this certification. This self-paced certification training will be created and rolled out in collaboration with members of the Distance Learning Advisory Committee, to reflect a mix of instructional technology, Quality Matters standards, federal RSI (regular and substantive interaction) requirements, accessibility, as well as universal design for learning.
