Dr. Glenda Brown Balas, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of North Texas at Dallas, has been a nationally-recognized figure in higher education for several years, and recently she received another honor. Dr. Balas was honored with an Outstanding Alumni Award by Eastern New Mexico University, where she received both her undergraduate and MBA. She has a doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Iowa.

In 2016, she served as the UNT Dallas interim provost and senior vice president of Academic Affairs. She is known for her background and academic achievements in journalism. From 2010-13, Dr. Balas chaired the Communications and Journalism Department at the University of New Mexico. In the two years prior, she was chair of the Mass Communications Department at Sam Houston State University, served on the faculty at DePauw University in Indiana, and was a teaching assistant at the University of Iowa.

Before her 25-year career in higher education, Dr. Balas had an impressive career in the media industry. From 1974-81 she worked for KENW-TV of Eastern New Mexico University in multiple roles, including director of programming. As a student, she was the editor of the campus newspaper and the university’s yearbook. Dr. Balas grew up in Roosevelt County, New Mexico.
