Dean John Gasko UNT Dallas School of Education Emerging Teacher Institute

Dr. John Gasko, Dean of the University of North Texas at Dallas School of Education and founder of its Emerging Teacher Institute, was named Monday a member of Deans for Impact, a national network of leaders committed to transforming how the United States prepares future educators.

One of just 22 members of Deans for Impact, Gasko believes that this country’s teacher-preparation system must do better: Nearly 200,000 new teachers graduate from U.S. preparation programs each year, and many say they feel unprepared to teach in classrooms of their own. This is starting to change, thanks to leaders like Gasko, who are spearheading innovative improvement efforts within their own programs and across the field.

“With Deans for Impact, I’m joining a highly engaged network of deans who are trying to answer the big question: Is our collective work leading to better preparation and better outcomes for schools, educators and kids?” Gasko said.

Gasko is one of eight new members announced on Monday. The group of 22 members work collaboratively together to advise and design programming that reaches more than 130 additional leaders and 27,000 teacher-candidates.

“Our members are a selective group of proven leaders who want to create a vision for system-wide change,” said Benjamin Riley, founder and executive director of Deans for Impact. “Deans for Impact is proud to foster this movement every step of the way by creating and empowering networks of leaders from diverse contexts who want to work together to ensure every student is taught by a well-prepared teacher.”

Deans for Impact is committed to building equitable and inclusive communities that are diverse by design. The programs led by new members are located in urban, suburban and rural geographies; they are public, private and alternative, within minority-serving institutions and at predominately white institutions.

Last weekend, Gasko and the Emerging Teacher Institute debuted its comic book, "Jovi La Justiciera," an innovative approach to recruiting future bilingual educators, at the Texas Latino Comic Con.
