Dallas - (August 15, 2017) – Today, the University of North Texas at Dallas launched UNTD-TV – a streaming, university-sponsored television station broadcast over the popular social streaming web site and mobile application YouTube. As part of this new media initiative for the city of Dallas’ only public, 4-year institution, former NBA standout Stephen Howard – a Dallas native and broadcaster for ESPN – will host the new channel and help UNT Dallas spread its mission to empower students, transform lives and strengthen communities.

As a Dallas native, Academic All-American at DePaul University and the son of two educators, Howard is an ideal fit for UNTD-TV. His father, Smith Howard, was a guidance counselor for 40 years at Dallas Lincoln High School – one of UNT Dallas’ partners as an “Early College High School” that creates a clear pathway for students to earn their bachelor’s degree from UNTD. Further, Howard is already active in the South Dallas community as a board member for the Oak Cliff YMCA.

“Stephen Howard is from Dallas, understands our community and is an example of what you can achieve in life with hard work and dedication,” said UNT Dallas President Bob Mong. “Stephen believes in our mission and shares the belief that education is a great equalizer when it comes to social mobility.”

In his role with UNT Dallas, Howard will host UNTD-TV programming, mentor students and provide brand-building insights and consultation gained from his experiences with ESPN, FOX and as a social media influencer.

The University of North Texas at Dallas empowers students, transforms lives and strengthens communities. Perched on a hilltop, overlooking the Downtown Dallas skyline, UNT Dallas is the only public, accredited 4-year university in the City of Dallas. UNT Dallas includes the UNT Dallas College of Law in Downtown Dallas and is part of the UNT System.
