University of North Texas at Dallas Provost Dr. Betty Stewart announced two promotions for the Spring 2019 semester, tapping Dr. Mario P. Casa de Calvo as Interim Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Dr. Ali Shaqlaih as Interim Dean of the Graduate School, a newly created position.

Dr. Casa de Calvo, an Associate Professor of Psychology, served as the coordinator and original designer of the UNT Dallas Psychology program from 2014-2018, and as Associate Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 2018. He replaces Dr. Glenda Balas, who is staying on at UNT Dallas as a Professor of Communication and Technology.

“I have complete confidence that Dr. Casa de Calvo and Dr. Shaqlaih possess the knowledge and skill to lead and grow their respective schools in both enrollment and academic success,” Dr. Stewart said. “These two professors are deeply committed to UNT Dallas, and we are fortunate that they are willing to assume the responsibilities of Interim Dean.”

Dr. Casa de Calvo received his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Texas Tech University, and has research interests in Social and Industrial/Organizational Psychology. His previous research investigated topics such as behavioral confirmation, identity negotiation and nonconscious mimicry. His current research interests include terror management theory and organizational identity, organizational commitment, job satisfaction and leadership.

He has published manuscripts in a variety of psychological journals, and has presented his research at local, national and international conferences.

“The most exciting aspect of this position is the opportunity to work collectively with my colleagues to establish and/or maintain policies that enhance the academic and professional experiences of our students and faculty,” Dr. Casa de Calvo said.

Dr. Shaqlaih, who joined UNT Dallas in the fall of 2010 as Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Secondary Education, becomes the first dean of UNT Dallas’ growing Graduate School. He previously served as Associate Dean of the School Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Coordinator of the Department of Mathematics and Information Sciences. As Associate Dean, he played an instrumental role in shaping the “Re-Imagining the First Year Experience” program and redesigning the “Information Technology” program.

An educator, mathematician and researcher, Dr. Shaqlaih has devoted much of his career to K-20 Education Reform, STEM teaching and learning, and teacher professional development.

He has published several papers and book chapters, delivered presentations at national conferences, conducted workshops and has reviewed several articles, books and degree programs.

“I am pleased, honored and very excited to be the founding Dean of the Graduate School. Aligned with UNT Dallas’ mission, the Graduate School plays a vital role in promoting academic excellence and enhancing the intellectual life of the community by preparing graduate students to be scholars, leaders and professionals,” Dr. Shaqlaih said. “I am committed to the university mission, believe in team-based work and look forward to working with the campus and the community members to cultivate the Graduate School’s role.”
