In another shining example of the caliber of faculty assembled at UNT Dallas, School of Business professor Dr. Cathy Scott has been awarded The 2018 Bea Sanders/AICPA Teaching Innovation Award for innovative teaching practices.

Presented by the The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), Dr. Scott shared the honor with colleague Markus Ahrens, professor of accounting at St. Louis Community College. The team's submission, "The Teaching and Learning Toolbox" is a website they developed in 2015 for sharing technological resources, including hardware, software and apps, as well as pedagogical strategies, among accounting educators. The toolbox is a free resource.

"Our submission was created as a resource to help fellow educators connect technology with pedagogy, as well as simplify incorporating technology with a 'purpose' into courses," Dr. Scott said. "The site has evolved over the years, being utilized by fellow educators in 49 states and over 30 countries. It is a great honor to have this resource recognized and utilized by our peers."

Dr. Scott was a professor at Navarro College when she developed the website with Professor Ahrens. She initially came to UNT Dallas as an adjunct instructor in the Dealership Management and Accounting Programs, and joined the UNT Dallas faculty this fall as Associate Professor of Business Accounting.

"After a 25-year career in accounting and the automotive/recreational vehicle industries, plus 14 years in academia, I am excited to be at UNTD, where I can combine my passions of developing future accountants as well as training future leaders in the automotive industry," Dr. Scott said.

The AICPA Pre-Certification Education Executive Committee’s Teaching Innovation Task Force selected the winners and honorable mentions at the American Accounting Association’s Effective Learning Strategies poster sessions in August 2018 in National Harbor, Md.

“The accounting profession relies on innovative educators to cultivate its next generation of leaders and problem-solvers,” said Yvonne Hinson, CPA, CGMA, academic in residence, Association of International Certified Professional Accountants. “These awards recognize professors for finding new and creative ways to teach and inspire students.”
