Military veterans were honored at the University of North Texas at Dallas Wednesday November 11 at a celebration hosted by the UNT Dallas Veteran Student Organization (VSO). Honored guests included Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Dallas; Colonel William Dwiggins (USMC, ret); and members of the UNT Dallas faculty, staff and student community who also served in the armed forces. The event also included the formal dedication of the new Veterans Success Center (VSC) on campus.

“Today we honor and celebrate our veterans,” said Dr. Dan Edelman (U.S. Army Veteran), executive vice president and chief financial officer at UNT Dallas. “We believe in our student veterans at UNT Dallas, and we support you. You have the desire, the sense of mission and the courage to succeed in all you do.”

Student veteran Ed Vonder, U.S. Navy, encouraged the veterans in attendance to seek support on campus, and thanked the UNT Dallas VSC for becoming a second home.

“When I came to UNT Dallas, it reminded me of the camaraderie I enjoyed in the military,” Vonder said. “It’s so family oriented. I knew this was the place for me.”

Congresswoman Johnson thanked the country’s veterans for their bravery, and reminded everyone that it’s impossible to do too much for those who are willing to serve and sacrifice for others’ freedom.

“Whatever our veterans need, I stand ready to try and get that for them,” Johnson said. “When our military members come back from the war, we should celebrate them. It’s their service that keeps us safe. To all of you who have served, thank you.”

The newly dedicated Veterans Success Center provides counseling, advising, career support, tutoring services, and camaraderie for current students and their families. Military veterans who can best relate to student veterans’ unique concerns will staff the Center. Future services will include priority registration, a student veteran orientation, on-campus picnics for student veterans and their families, and fundraising events for student veteran scholarships.
