Program to build leadership competencies within the community, and trust between our citizens and police officers

DALLAS, Texas (August 9, 2017)--UNT Dallas’ master’s degree programs in clinical mental health counseling and school counseling recently received two-year accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). CACREP is the accrediting body for master’s and doctoral degree programs in counseling and its specialties that are offered by colleges and universities in the United States and throughout the world.

“Our counseling faculty deserve to be congratulated for the time, energy, and commitment they have given throughout this accreditation process,” said Dr. Constance Lacy, dean of the School of Human Services. “This nationally recognized credential will enhance our students’ employment opportunities, while adding well deserved credibility and notoriety to our school and programs.”

The CACREP accreditation is considered the recognized standard of excellence in professional counseling education. This certification will allow the program to better pursue its mission to provide quality mental health services to Dallas and the surrounding communities. The accreditation is through October 2019, at which time CACREP will consider the programs for full accreditation.

“Our UNT Dallas counseling faculty, including Dr. Yu-fen Lin, Dr. Trigg Even, and Dr. Cynthia Matthews, were passionate and relentless in pursuing CACREP because we want our students to have the very best education possible,” said Dr. Jennifer Baggerly, LPC-S, RPT-S, counseling professor at UNT Dallas. “CACREP accreditation means that we uphold the highest national standards in counselor education content and quality to ensure our students become competent counselors. Our students will now have a seal of approval that employers seek.”
