The University of North Texas at Dallas is pleased to announce the creation of the Emerging Teacher Institute (ETI). Under the direction of Dr. John Gasko, dean of the School of Education, ETI will seek to train and prepare teachers and school leaders holistically, with an emphasis not only on their intellectual and clinical development, but also on strengthening their capacity to develop socially and emotionally.

“We are experiencing a crisis in our region based on the alarming numbers of teachers leaving the profession. The top reason, we are learning, is their inability to deal with stress. The data tell us that the problem will continue to escalate. The UNT Dallas Emerging Teacher Institute, therefore, is dedicated to preparing and equipping teachers such that they no longer have to choose between their own health and the call of a lifetime-which is to teach,” Gasko said. “We need good teachers to stay the course. Through capacity building and transformative development for both teachers and school leaders, we hope to make a sustainable impact on education in our region.”

Gasko has worked tirelessly to establish the Institute since he started at UNT Dallas in March 2016. He has built relationships with education and community leaders throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and specifically in the southern Dallas area.

“Teaching is a meaningful profession, and UNT Dallas is dedicated to increasing the number of passionate and committed teachers who are exceedingly well prepared for the classroom. This is another way we can serve our community.”

According to Gasko, partnerships with area ISDs will play a vital role in ETI’s future success. Early wins for ETI will center on listening to area teachers and school leaders, students, families, and create solutions to the identified issues that surface. Long-term, ETI seeks to impact the region in such a way that the teachers here are prepared to effectively teach and reach students in high-need classrooms and remain stable in the face of adversity over time.
