The Military Order of the Purple Heart designated the University of North Texas at Dallas as a Purple Heart University November 11, 2016, as a part of the Veterans Day Gala at UNT Dallas. Dr. Dan Edelman, UNT Dallas executive vice president for finance and administration, chief financial officer and U.S. Army veteran, received the honorary plaque on behalf of the university.

The honor recognizes UNT Dallas’ significant efforts toward serving veterans and their families. As a Purple Heart University, UNT Dallas joins other universities, cities and states across the country in honoring the sacrifices made by Purple Heart Medal recipients. The designation expresses gratitude to all veterans for their contributions to defending the freedom of the United States.

The gala was hosted by UNT Dallas’ Veteran Success Center, in partnership with Dallas County Community College District. Veterans from throughout North Texas were in attendance, as well as Jeffery Milligan, director of the VA North Texas Health Care System. Mark Hurley, president and CEO of Fiduciary Network, a West Point graduate, and son of former UNT System Chancellor Alfred F. Hurley, served as the keynote speaker.

“We are here tonight to celebrate two important things,” Hurley said. “The first is these veterans and their willingness to sacrifice their lives for our freedom. The second is UNT Dallas. My father would be proud to see this university growing, thriving and serving its moral duty to provide educational opportunities to students in this community and our veterans.”

Hurley co-founded Fiduciary Network (FN) in 2006. Prior to helping start FN, Furley was Chairman and CEO of Undiscovered Managers, LLC, a Managing Director at Merrill Lynch and Co., a Vice President at Goldman Sachs & Co. and served as a Presidential Appointee at a bureau of the United States Treasury Department from 1990-1992. He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and received an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
