The University of North Texas at Dallas joined the Highland Hills community October 28, 2016 to celebrate the grand opening of Save-a-Lot. The grocery store is the first in the area in nearly a decade.

Long considered a food desert, residents of Highland Hills often had to rely on local convenience stores and gas stations for milk and bread. Some traveled up to 15-20 miles, often by bus, to get a grocery store in Lancaster or DeSoto.

The grocery store, located off Stewart Simpson and Bonnie View, is independently owned and operated by local businessman Joseph Kemp and his family.

City leaders are optimistic that this store opening could signal great things for a community anchored by Paul Quinn College, UNT Dallas, and Amazon.

Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Erik Wilson said, “We want to make sure this store is successful so it spurs more development, not only in this area, but throughout Southern Dallas.”
