Core Curriculum Committee

 

Purpose: 

The UNT Dallas Core Curriculum Committee supports, develops and oversees the university’s core curriculum program and courses to promote intellectual inquiry, foster a breadth of knowledge drawn from diverse academic areas, and develop a set of critical core competencies.  The committee ensures that the program meets Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) requirements for the Texas Core Curriculum (Texas Educational Code 61.821-61.822) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools – Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) general education program requirements (Texas Administrative Code Rules 4.22, 4.23, 4.25, and 4.28 under Title 19, Part 1, Chapter 4, Subchapter B). 

Committee Responsibilities

  1. Establish a rationale undergirding the courses that meet general education requirements.
  2. Use established criteria for evaluating 1) new courses for inclusion in the core curriculum and 2) ongoing review of current courses to maintain adherence to the underlying rationale and to ensure the expected breadth of knowledge.
  3. Monitor undergraduate catalog content related to the core curriculum to ensure accuracy.
  4. Review results from the Core Curriculum Assessment Team and make recommendations for core curriculum courses as a part of an ongoing program review and recommend changes/improvements to the program in accordance with the Texas Administrative Code Rule 4.28.
  5. Develop policies and support processes for waivers and exceptions to the core curriculum program requirements in accordance with the Texas Administrative Code Rule 4.28.

Roster Structure: 

Faculty representatives specializing in each Foundational Component Area (FCA), School representatives from Business, Education and Human Services, member of the University Curriculum Committee, Director of University Accreditation and Policy or designated representative, member of the Office of the Registrar and member of Academic Advising and Student Success Center.

Roster Rotation Schedule: 

3-year terms (with exception of inaugural member roster that will be staggered for continuity)

Appointed by: 

Members are appointed as listed in the Responsible Department for Nomination. Faculty Senate will approve representatives of the committee.
