Biography

Marco Shappeck, Ph.D. in Linguistics (University of Illinois), specializes in the educational applications of sociolinguistic research in regions with notable language contact. Within this field, he has expertise in language grammaticalization processes as well as general theories of language variation and change. Having conducted extensive linguistic and ethnographic fieldwork in Spanish-English speech communities in the U.S. Southwest and among Spanish-Quichua bilinguals in the Ecuadorian Andes, a number of his collaborative research projects investigate life stages and social identity in language learning environments. Dr. Shappeck teaches courses in the Applied English major, Applied Linguistics minor, and UNTD Core Curriculum.
