Seventy-three UNT Dallas students enrolled in the MGMT 4660 International Management course over the last two years have participated in the X-Culture Project and received “Global Collaboration Certificates.”
The program involves theoretical training and two months of practical experience as a member of a Global Virtual Team. X-Culture partner businesses submit real business challenges and teams develop high-quality business plans for these multinational companies. During the Spring 2020 semester, 5,000 students from 140 universities in nearly 100 countries on six continents participated in the project.
“The X-Culture project provides our students an opportunity to gain first-hand experience in international virtual collaboration,” UNT Dallas business professor Dr. Banu Goktan Bilhan, who heads the program for the university. “They experience cultural differences while working on real business problems, and build the competence of working with a diverse group from all over the world.”
Most of the projects involve businesses that are trying to expand globally.
X-Culture project has partner companies such as Mercedes-Benz, Home Depot, Louis Vitton, Polaris International and Hard Rock International. Responsibilities included tasks such as conducting research on interview surveys, expanding service to schools, advising with promotional strategies, finance and funding, and writing the final proposal drafts.
X-Culture improves cultural intelligence through cross-cultural interactions, international and virtual collaboration competencies, and problem-solving skills. Students gain international collaboration and consulting skills.
School of Business Dean Karen Shumway is a strong supporter of the X-Culture project and the UNT Dallas School of Business pays the fee each semester for participating MGMT 4660 students. Interested students who are not enrolled in the MGMT 4660 course can also participate as “unaffiliated professionals.”
