Federal Pell Grants usually are awarded only to undergraduate students who display
exceptional financial need and have not earned a bachelor's, graduate, or professional
degree. You may not receive Federal Pell Grant funds from more than one school at
a time.
Students must continue to meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements and continue to demonstrate financial need.
The amount of Federal Pell Grant funds you may receive over your lifetime is limited
by a new federal law to be the equivalent of six years of Pell Grant funding. Since
the maximum amount of Pell Grant funding you can receive each year is equal to 100%,
the six-year equivalent is 600%.
If your lifetime eligibility used (LEU) equals or exceeds 600%, you may no longer
receive Pell Grant funding. Similarly, if your lifetime eligibility used (LEU) is
greater than 500% but less than 600%, while you will be eligible for a Pell Grant
for the next award year, you will not be able to receive a full scheduled award.
You can log in to StudentAid.gov with your username and password, then navigate to “My Aid” to view your LEU.
Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant
The
FAFSA Simplification Act changed eligibility for what were formerly called “Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants
(IASG)” and “Children of Fallen Heroes (CFH)” Scholarships.
To receive a Pell Grant based on eligibility under the
Special Rule, a student must be:
- the child of a parent or guardian who died in the line of duty while either serving
on active duty as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces on or after Sept. 11, 2001, or
actively serving as and performing the duties of a public safety officer; and
- younger than 33 years old as of the January 1 prior to the award year for which the
applicant is applying (e.g., For the 2024–25 award year, a student must be younger
than 33 years old as of Jan. 1, 2024, to be eligible).
Other aid for these students will be based on their calculated SAI.
Eligibility
Eligibility under the Special Rule does not need to be redetermined annually, certifying
a student as eligible under the Special Rule allows the student to continue receiving
a maximum Pell Grant award in subsequent award years.
Students who were eligible for and received Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant (IASG)
funds or received Pell Grant funds based on IASG or Children of Fallen Heroes (CFH)
eligibility criteria for prior award years but are not eligible for Pell Grant funds
under the Special Rule are eligible to receive Pell Grant funds based on prior IASG
or CFH eligibility criteria. Students remain eligible if they received at least one
disbursement of Pell Grant or IASG funds based on their IASG or CFH eligibility during
the prior award years and continue to meet the age requirement for the Special Rule.
Students who receive a maximum Pell Grant based on legacy IASG or CFH guidance continue
to be eligible if the student received at least one disbursement of funds based on
the grandfathered eligibility in each subsequent award year. If there is a break in
disbursement of one award year, then the student must qualify under the Special Rule
in HEA Section 401(c).
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
This is a need-based grant for undergraduate students. The grant doesn't have to be
repaid. However, if you withdraw from the university or stop attending classes, you
may be subject to the university's repayment policy.
Amount
You can receive between $100 and $4,000 a year, depending on your financial need,
when you apply, the amount of other aid you get, and the availability of funds at
UNT Dallas. Each participating school receives a certain amount of FSEOG funds each
year from the U.S. Department of Education’s office of Federal Student Aid. Once the
full amount of UNT Dallas’ FSEOG funds has been awarded to students, no more FSEOG
awards can be made for that year.
Eligibility
This grant for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need as determined
by their SAI. UNT Dallas may award FSEOG to a student at any level of enrollment.
Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements must be met. This grant is awarded to
undergraduates only.
Continued Eligibility
You must maintain enrollment as an undergraduate student and must not have previously
earned a bachelor’s degree. Your eligibility for Federal Student Aid, including the
FSEOG, is determined by completing the FAFSA form on an annual basis. UNT Dallas will
award the FSEOG each year based on that eligibility and other factors.
Teacher Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program
This program provides grants up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach
in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income
families.
TEACH Grant recipients must agree to teach for at least four academic years within
eight calendar years of completing the program of study for which a TEACH Grant was
received. This grant requires you to agree to complete a teaching service obligation
as a condition for receiving the grant, and if you don't complete the service obligation,
the TEACH Grant will be converted to a loan that you must repay, with interest.
Amount
For any TEACH Grant with a first disbursement on or after Oct. 1, 2020, and before
Oct. 1, 2026, the maximum award amount is $3,772.
Eligibility
Service Obligation Requirement
The teaching service requirement set out in the Agreement to Serve or Repay (Agreement)
that you must sign to receive a TEACH Grant. By signing the Agreement, you agree to:
- serve as a full-time, highly-qualified teacher for four elementary or secondary
school years at a school or educational service agency that serves low-income students;
- teach in a high-need field; and
- complete the required four years of teaching within eight years after you graduate
from or otherwise cease to be enrolled at the institution of higher education where
you received your TEACH Grants.
If you do not complete your teaching service obligation, the TEACH Grants you received
will be converted to loans that you must repay in full, with interest. For this reason,
it is very important that you fully understand the terms and conditions of the TEACH
Grant service obligation before you accept a TEACH Grant.
TEACH Grant recipients will now communicate directly with the U.S. Department of Education
(ED) to
submit and manage TEACH Grant certification forms, and upload suspension and discharge
requests
here.

Repayment
IMPORTANT: If you receive the grant and fail to graduate or complete this service obligation,
all amounts of TEACH Grants received will be converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized
Stafford Loan. Please note that loan interest will be retroactive and calculated with
an effective date from the original award disbursement. You must then repay this loan
to the U.S. Department of Education, with interest charged from the date the grant(s)
was disbursed.
