State Grants

Towards Excellence, Access and Success (TEXAS) Grant Program

The Texas Legislature established the TEXAS Grant to provide aid to Students with financial need who are attending a Texas public University or health-related institution. Funding is limited for this program. The TEXAS Grant award can be transferred between institutions.

Amount

UNT Dallas’ award maximum amount is $5,394 per semester. Students must be enrolled in at least 9 credit hours at UNT Dallas each term for TEXAS grant to disburse.

Eligibility

To receive an initial year (IY) award a student must:

  • be a Texas resident;
  • be registered with Selective Service, or be exempt
  • have applied for any available financial aid;
  • have financial need;
  • be enrolled at least 3/4 time;
  • not have earned a baccalaureate degree;
  • not have been convicted of:
    • any felony; or
    • any offense under the law of any jurisdiction involving a controlled substance as defined by the Health and Safety Code, Chapter 481, Texas Controlled Substances Act; and
  • be enrolled in a baccalaureate degree program at a public four-year or HRI institution as a first-time undergraduate and qualify through one of the following four pathways:
    1. High School Graduation Pathway
    2. Associate Degree Pathway
    3. Honorable Military Discharge Pathway
    4. TEOG Transfer Pathway

To receive a renewal year (RY) award, a student must:

  • have previously received an initial year TEXAS grant;
  • At the end of the first year, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements in order to be considered for a second year in the TEXAS Grant program.
  • After completing the second year in the program, you are required to meet the following conditions at the end of every spring term.
    • You must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.50.
    • You must complete 24 semester credit hours each academic year

Hardship Provisions (TAC, Title 19, Section 22.231)

A student who is ineligible for a TEXAS Grant may be eligible under a hardship provision based on one of the following provisions:

  1. If the student is enrolled in less than 9 SCHs (but at least 6 SCHs)
  2. If the student's GPA falls below SAP requirements
  3. If the student's completion rate falls below SAP requirements
  4. If the student's number of completed hours falls below SAP requirements
  5. If the student requires an extension of the year limits to complete their degree
  6. If the student receives a grant after attempting more than 150 hours
    • However, the total number of hours paid for, at least in part, with TEXAS Grant funds may not exceed 150 semester credit hours or the equivalent.

Reminder: A student enrolled for fewer than 6 SCHs CANNOT receive a TEXAS Grant award, regardless of the circumstances, including hardships (See TAC, Title 19, Section 22.230(b)

Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG)

This grant is available to undergraduate, graduate, and law students. This grant provides assistance to students with financial need.

Amount

The amount is base on the Student Aid Index as determined by the FAFSA and UNT Dallas available funding.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be a Texas resident, non-resident or foreign student
  • Have an established financial need
  • Be enrolled at least half-time
  • Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements
  • Register for the selective service, if applicable, unless exempt
