Roberto Gallardo

Dr. Roberto Carlos Gallardo earned his B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside. His interdisciplinary research and teaching interests span multiple areas of sociology, criminology, and criminal justice. His previous scholarship has examined the experiences of Latino/Hispanic police officers, police recruitment and career persistence, artificial intelligence and body-worn cameras in policing, and contemporary challenges facing policing in major metropolises around the world. His research also extends beyond policing to include, among others, immigration in Europe, tattooing and social identity, and how cultural and societal structures influence perceptions of law abidance and social behavior. Dr. Gallardo maintains an active international academic focus, including a collaborative partnership with the University of Security Studies in Nuevo León, Mexico. Through this partnership, he works with faculty and law enforcement professionals on research and academic projects examining public security and policing in Mexico and Latin America, including policing during public health crises, women in policing, community policing, and the future of policing in global metropolises. In addition to his academic work, he collaborates directly with law enforcement agencies and serves as an instructor for police academy recruits, helping bridge academic research with professional practice. Outside of the university, Dr. Gallardo has a strong interest in international cultural exploration. He frequently travels internationally both for personal enrichment and to gain firsthand exposure to different cultures, communities, and social institutions, experiences that continue to inform his teaching, research, and broader comparative interest in academia.
