Emergency Power Outage Plan
When power outages occur, certain hazards in the laboratory become more likely. Reduced
fume hood ventilation, lower visibility, and the potential loss of valuable experiments
are all possible outcomes. Being prepared minimizes risks to your health and your
work.
Preparation Before an Outage
- Know the location of emergency lighting (flashlights are on the instructor’s desk;
exit signs remain lit).
- Identify temperature-sensitive specimens or samples and know how to relocate them
if needed.
- Ensure freezers have a thermometer to monitor temperature during a power outage.
- Keep cold storage equipment tightly closed—these units will hold temperature for a
while even without power.
- Know which equipment is connected to a generator so you can plan where to place specimens.
- If available, store samples in dry ice during extended outages.
Actions During an Outage
Please notify us of any lab emergencies at LabManagement@untdallas.edu. If there is a life-threatening emergency, call 911 immediately.
- Stay calm and review this plan if you forget any details.
- Stop all experiments and other lab work immediately.
- Turn off or unplug all heat sources to prevent hazards when power returns.
- If using a fume hood, close the sash to prevent fumes from spreading into the lab.
- Evacuate the lab within 15 minutes.
- Limit opening freezer or refrigerator doors to maintain internal temperature.
- If you move contents between cooling units, make a list to keep track of items.
- Place signage on the door (e.g., “Keep Closed”) to alert others.
- Turn off valves on any gas cylinders not required for essential equipment.
