UNT Dallas Athletics is adding two new sports to its program: competitive dance and women’s flag football. The university already has men’s and women’s basketball, track and cross-country teams.
As part of the change, the Blazerettes dance team, which debuted in 2022, has moved into the Athletics Department.
“These new teams offer expanded opportunities for our student-athletes in sports that are gaining in popularity,” said Josh Howard, UNT Dallas Athletics Director and Head Basketball Coach. “As the university grows, the Trailblazers are expanding our areas of competition – and we’re not done yet.”
Auditions for the competitive dance team will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To help prospective team members prepare, a general interest meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at 6 p.m. and clinics will be held April 6, 7, and 10, 2026, from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
“We encourage students to come learn about competitive dance, express their interest, and ask questions,” said Keenah Lambert, UNT Dallas Athletics General Manager. “They will be the foundation of our new dance team. We welcome their energy and enthusiasm.”
Recruitment for the women’s flag football team will begin later this year. The sport’s popularity is growing quickly in North Texas and across the country.
Both teams are expected to be ready for competition in the 2026-27 season. A new dance team coach has been hired and the search is continuing for a flag football coach.
Athletics can help empower students by providing activities beyond academics, improving communication skills and teaching the importance of teamwork and coachability. With five teams and counting, UNT Dallas is proud of student-athletes and encourages potential future team members to join us. Go Trailblazers!
