
What is Applied Gerontology?
The Applied Gerontology certificate gives students the exposure and knowledge to work successfully in a range of social service positions such as a geriatric specialist. It provides marketable skills in the geriatric field. Specialization/Certificates are earned when a HSML major or UNT Dallas student completes a minimum of 12 hours of advanced-level course work in one of the approved human services specialization or certificate programs. The student develops advanced knowledge and skills by completing the required coursework.

New students can select HSML on their admission application, however non-HSML majors can select Applied Gerontology as a specialization certificate in their respective major. Current students who are passionate about serving theaging population would change their major to HSML. To change your major, you may contact your academic advisor.
What marketable skills will I learn?
- Understanding of human aging as a combination of psychological, social, and biological processes
- Utilize critical thinking skills when analyzing diverse and complex aging issues and outcomes for elders, families, and society from an interdisciplinary perspective
- Analyze research data pertaining to social phenomena influencing the aging process
- Demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with older adults and professionals in the field of aging
- Utilize the principles of evidence-based practice when providing service to older adults
