What Is a Citizen Volunteer in Police Service?
A citizen volunteer in police service is a member of the community who provides support services to a law enforcement agency without monetary compensation. Services typically include community outreach, telephone support, research, and other administrative tasks.
Job Description
This is a volunteer position. Volunteers assigned to this classification work under minimum supervision. Definite work objectives are set for the volunteer, but methods of performing tasks are frequently left to the volunteer’s judgment, with occasional instructions or advice provided by the coordinator.
Responsibilities
- Greet and welcome students, faculty, staff, and guests
- Provide directions to students, faculty, staff, and guests
- Respond to inquiries from students, faculty, staff, and guests
- Patrol buildings
- Maintain premises in a clean and organized manner
- Provide traffic and crowd control during special events
- Shuttle students, faculty, staff, and guests to campus destinations
- Monitor surveillance cameras in the Welcome Center
- Assist with door unlocks
- Answer incoming calls
Volunteers may assist new students, faculty, staff, and guests in navigating campus. They may also provide information about campus activities and direct individuals to the appropriate location or contact for more detailed assistance.

Who Can Volunteer?
Individuals from nearly any background who are at least 18 years of age may volunteer.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of a background check and attendance at orientation
- Valid driver’s license
- High school diploma
- Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions accurately
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to relate to individuals from diverse educational, cultural, and social backgrounds
- Effective communication skills
- Ability to learn assigned tasks
- Customer service oriented
- Responsible, reliable, and punctual
Physical Requirements
While some volunteers may have access to seating, the role may require physical exertion such as standing for extended periods, recurring bending, or lifting items weighing up to 25 pounds.
Driving University Vehicles
On occasion, volunteers may operate department shuttles to escort students, faculty, staff, and guests to campus destinations.
Work Schedule
Volunteers are scheduled based on availability. A coordinator works with each volunteer to establish a mutually agreeable schedule.
