Advising FAQ

Questions? We've Got You!

Academic Advising at UNT Dallas connects you with a professional Advisor to discuss your academic progress, course selections, and specific University degree requirements. To ensure you stay on track, Advisors will meet with you at least once per semester to finalize your degree plan, select your class schedule for the upcoming term, and review all relevant academic requirements.

Below are some frequently asked advising questions:

Advisors & Scheduling

Find your Academic Advisor by logging on to myUNTD → Resources → Navigate → Scroll down to see your Advisor on the right hand side. You can also find your Advisor by logging on to myUNTD → Academic Progress → Advisors.

Make an appointment with your Academic Advisor by using our “Meet with Your Advisor" link to follow the correct steps to schedule your appointment.

While there may be select days set aside each semester when Advisors offer walk-in appointments, students are generally encouraged to schedule an appointment in advance.  Walk-in days will be posted on our “Advising Hours” page.

If you do not see an assigned Academic Advisor in your Navigate account, please email Advising@untdallas.edu for further assistance.

Enrollment

Enrollment times are set by the Office of the Registrar and can be found under the Academic Calendars. Your Advisor will share this information during your advising meeting as well. You may begin enrolling in classes at your enrollment time, and you can continue to add/swap/adjust your schedule until the posted deadlines.

You can enroll in classes any time after the enrollment window has opened. There are two ways to enroll into your courses. If you are a current UNT Dallas student, log in to your myUNTD student portal to get started. Go to Enrollment → Class Search and Enroll.

You can also craft your perfect schedule with the Visual Schedule Builder tool from within your student portal.

To see available classes at UNT Dallas, log in to myUNTD, click on the Enrollment tile on the Student Homepage, and then use Class Search and Enroll or Visual Schedule Builder to filter class offerings. For specific course information like details, meeting times, and section notes, click on the desired class section number after searching.

You can enroll in up to 18 credit hours.

The minimum number of hours to be considered full-time status is 12 credit hours per semester. Students are advised to reach out to Financial Aid, Housing, and Greek Life to confirm any unique requirements before changing enrollment status.

Anything above 18 hours requires permission from your Academic Dean. Contact your Academic Advisor for more information about requesting an overload form.

All new students will have an Advising Required hold on their account to ensure that they meet with an Advisor prior to registering for courses. This hold will be removed by an Advisor during the student's initial advising appointment. To schedule a New Student Advising appointment, contact the Front Desk Team for the Academic Advising Center via email at Advising@untdallas.edu or phone at (972) 338-1645 for assistance.

Tip: Before meeting, review your degree plan and draft a potential schedule; your Advisor will help you refine it.

Academic Records

Find your Degree Progress Report by logging on to MyUNTD → Academic Progress (Pie Chart) → Academic Progress Tab.

You can also view all of the programs in the UNT Dallas catalog at undergrad.catalog.untdallas.edu. When you find your program, click on it and then click the “Program Requirements” tab to view ALL the classes that must be completed for your degree.

You are generally required to complete at least 120 semester credit hours. Additionally, a significant portion of these hours must be advanced-level courses (3000 or 4000 level), and you must complete a certain percentage of your coursework in residence at UNT Dallas to meet the University's residency requirements.

The number of elective hours each student needs vary. In completing all degree requirements, (including the Texas Core Curriculum, major requirements, major electives, and any applicable minors), if the total hours earned are below the minimum required for the Bachelor’s degree (120), you will fill the gap with elective hours. You should discuss your specific number of elective hours with your Academic Advisor.

Change of Major & Minors

If you are considering changing your major, reach out to your Academic Advisor and let them know what you’re thinking about. Your Advisor will help you review degree requirements for potential new majors. Be prepared to meet all the graduation requirements for your new major, which can be found in the UNT Dallas catalog. During your meeting, you will need to complete a Change of Major form which your Advisor will assist with.

That’s okay! We’ll use your advising appointment to talk about subjects you might find interesting and lean on the Texas Core Curriculum to help you choose classes from a wide array of subjects. This way you’ll be fulfilling degree requirements while getting to explore both UNT Dallas and your own interests!

A minor is optional unless a specific major mandates one. To determine if a minor is required for your major, consult with your Academic Advisor or check the official UNT Dallas Undergraduate Catalog for your degree program's specific requirements. In some cases, adding a non-required minor may necessitate you taking more than the minimum number of hours required for graduation.

Coursework

Before dropping a course, make sure to talk to your Academic Advisor to see how dropping the course will affect your degree progress. Please keep in mind that there are deadlines when dropping a course. Refer to the Academic Calendar for specific dates.

After meeting with you Advisor, log on to myUNTD  → Enrollment → Drop Classes → Select the class you wish to drop → Click “drop” in the upper right-hand corner.

You will receive a green check mark once you have successfully dropped the course.

Before enrolling at another institution, make sure to talk to your Academic Advisor to see if the course you take will be able to transfer back to UNTD. Many classes will be transferred. Use the Transfer Equivalency Tool to check in advance. Bring the syllabus and transcript to the Advisor if you want to confirm whether it satisfies your UNT Dallas requirement.

If the course can transfer, you are responsible for sending over the other institutions transcripts to the Registrar’s office at UNTD once you complete the class. Advising does not request transcripts from other institutions.

Tip: Concurrent enrollment in your final semester is not allowed.

If you were waitlisted or unable to register for a class, you have the option to enroll in another open section of the class, remain on the waitlist, or enroll in a different course. You can find your remaining degree requirements by looking at your Academic Progress Report. Waitlisted courses do not guarantee you a seat in the class.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

A graduation check is a final audit to confirm you have (or will have) met all degree requirements. Request it in your second to last semester (or early in your last semester at the latest). Your Advisor or the Academic Advising Center can schedule it.

You must submit your graduation application by the application deadline. See here for important deadlines.

First, talk with the professor to see whether there was an error or misunderstanding. If unresolved, you may file an appeal per the appeals policy. Make sure to follow deadlines and provide documentation.
