Graduation FAQs

Graduation Frequently-Asked Questions

I finished my classes. When will I receive my diploma?

If you have successfully completed all of your academic requirements, and do not have an outstanding balance with the university, your diplomas will be mailed out, from JOSTENS, 8-10 weeks after the last day of semester (after final grades are posted). Please DO NOT contact JOSTENS directly.

How do I apply for graduation?

Log into MyLaw.  Click on Academic Records > Apply for Graduation.  Follow the prompts to confirm your degree credentials and select your expected graduation term and then hit "Submit Application."

I am trying to apply for graduation but it's not letting me.

Check here to make sure the application has opened for the current semester and/or has not already closed for the current semester. If the application has already closed, you will need to wait until the following semester to apply or you can contact the Registrar at 214-752-5973.

What is the difference between graduation and commencement?

Graduation refers to the process in which students apply for their degree to be awarded at the end of the semester. The Registrar office will complete final audits of student degrees. If the final audit is approved then students will be awarded a degree and a diploma will be mailed.

Commencement refers to the event held by the institution to celebrate students’ graduation. Commencement includes the public conferring of degrees, walking across the stage, and receiving a UNT Dallas diploma cover. Walking in commencement does not guarantee that a student has graduated. Some students may walk across the stage and appear in the commencement program while not having graduated yet.

I am walking in the commencement ceremony, does that mean I graduated?

No, walking in the commencement ceremony does not guarantee that you have graduated.  Graduation is based on the successful completion of your degree requirements.

Once I apply for graduation, what are my next steps?

You can order your regalia, invitations, and other graduation related items through JOSTENS.  A couple of months after the start of the semester, you will be contacted by UNTD student email, with additional information, including the ordering link from JOSTENS, as well as the days and times JOSTENS will be on campus.

What if I missed the deadline to apply for graduation?

Students who have not yet applied for graduation may contact the Office of the Registrar at 214-752-5973 or at lawregistrar@untdallas.edu for more information. Any students who are approved late through appeal are not guaranteed to have their name printed in the commencement program.

When will my degree be awarded?

The awarding of degrees does not occur until after the last day of the semester, grades are posted, and all academic requirements are met. This often occurs 2 – 4 weeks after commencement.

If I do not attend commencement, will my degree still be awarded?

Yes. Students who elect not to participate in commencement will still have their degree awarded approximately 2-4 weeks after the last day of class, and will also receive their diploma 8-10 weeks after their degree has been awarded.

Do my guests need a ticket to come to commencement?

Yes, guests will need a ticket to attend the commencement ceremony.  A few months before commencement, you will be contacted by UNTD student email, that will detail when and where you can pick up tickets for your guests.

I graduate in the summer. Is there a commencement ceremony in the summer?

No, commencement is only held in May.  If you need 4 hours or less to graduate, you can participate in the May commencement ceremony.

If I participate in Commencement in May, but will not officially graduate until the summer can I still sit for the Bar Exam?

If you are within 4 semester credit hours of completing your graduation requirements, you can sit for the Bar Exam.

How can I order additional copies of my diploma?

Please complete the Diploma Order form found here. Once you have completed the form, bring in person or email it to lawregistrar@untdallas.edu.  Requests for additional diplomas are sent to and mailed from JOSTENS 3 times a year (January, May and August) and can take up to 6-8 weeks for delivery.  Please DO NOT contact JOSTENS directly.
