Academic Advising Checklist

Before meeting with your Academic Advisor, it's important to come prepared—no matter where you are in your academic journey. Our Academic Advising Checklist is designed to help you make the most of your advising session by identifying key steps to take based on your current classification (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior).

Use the checklist below to get ready for your advising appointment:
 
Action Item What to Know
Review your Degree Audit Log into MyUNTD and review your degree plan to ensure you're on track with required courses.
Prepare Questions About Your Major If you’re undecided or exploring options, write down questions to ask your Advisor.
Know Your Core Curriculum Progress Check which general education (core) classes you’ve taken and what’s left to complete.
Know Your Completed and Current Courses Be ready to talk about what you’ve taken so far, including AP, dual credit, or transfer credit.
Check for Registration Holds Log in and make sure there are no holds that could prevent you from registering for classes.

Confirm Core and Prerequisite Completion
 Make sure you’re finishing core courses and any prerequisites for your major.
Review Your Degree Audit
 Double-check that your audit is up to date and accurately reflects your completed and in-progress courses.
Check for Registration Holds Make sure there are no holds on your account that would prevent class registration.
Update or Declare Your Major (if not yet declared)
 If you haven’t already declared, or if you're thinking of changing, talk through your options now.
Review GPA and Academic Standing
 Be aware of your GPA and what’s required to stay in good standing. Understand how your GPA affects scholarships, academic progress, or major requirements.

Review Degree Progress and Upper-Level Courses Ensure you’re enrolling in the correct number and type of upper-division (3000/4000 level) courses for your degree and meeting major requirements.
Review Your Degree Audit Closely Make sure all requirements are being met and that nothing is overlooked.
Check Minor Requirements (if applicable)
 Make sure you're fulfilling the right courses and hours for any declared minor.
Start Planning Your Final Year Schedule
 Discuss when you want to graduate and build your class schedule accordingly.
Seek Internship or Fieldwork Opportunities Ask your Advisor about career-relevant experiences that could be credit-bearing.

 Know when and how to apply for graduation in MyUNTD — don't miss the deadline.
Resolve Any Holds or Outstanding Balances
 Double-check your student account! Ensure you’ve met all academic, administrative, and financial obligations before your final semester. It could delay graduation.
Plan for Life After Graduation Discuss job search strategies, grad school plans, or certification exams if needed.
