Languages Other Than English (LOTE) - Spanish

What Is an Spanish Education Degree?

A Languages Other Than English (LOTE) - Spanish Education degree from UNT Dallas is the first step in becoming a certified Spanish teacher in preschool through 12th grade. Students in the LOTE-Spanish program will be prepared to teach the Spanish language, literature, and cultures. This unique program is jointly offered between the Spanish Department in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciencess and the Teacher Education Department in the College of Education and Human Development. We accept and apply transfer coursework, AP Spanish credit, and CLEP credit.  Because Spanish is a high needs area for teachers, students have access to funding like the TEACH grant.

What kinds of classes will I take?

The following are examples of classes you will take as a LOTE-Spanish major.

  • Introduction to Translation in Spanish
  • Spanish Composition and Conversation
  • Introduction to Hispanic Literature
  • Spanish in the Community
  • Reading and Writing, Birth through Grade 6
  • Introduction to Early Childhood Education

What is the process for becoming a teacher in Texas?

  1. Apply to the College of Education and Human Development at UNT Dallas
  2. Obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in education from an accredited university such as UNT Dallas
  3. Pass certification exams for your certification pathway (EC-6, Bilingual, ESL, Special Education, etc.)
  4. Submit a state application for certification with the Texas Education Agency
  5. Complete fingerprinting
