What Is an Middle Grades ELAR Education with ESL Degree?
A Middle Grades (4th-8th) ELAR Education degree from UNT Dallas is the first step in becoming a certified English Language Arts teacher in fourth through eighth grade. Middle Grades Education majors can choose from four pathways: ELAR, math, science, and social studies. Students in the ELAR Education with ESL pathway will be prepared to teach English, language arts, and reading in upper elementary and middle school. Many school districts in Texas require teachers to have an ESL supplemental certification.

- Reading and Writing, Birth through Grade 6

What is the process for becoming a teacher in Texas?
- Apply to the College of Education and Human Development at UNT Dallas
- Obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in education from an accredited university such as UNT Dallas
- Pass certification exams for your certification pathway (4th-8th ELAR, Bilingual, ESL, Special Education, etc.)
- Submit a state application for certification with the Texas Education Agency
- Complete fingerprinting
